Looking for some easy to make Christmas ornaments or some easy crafts for kids for the holiday season? Then try these painted swirl ornaments. These ornaments make an excellent project for just about any age group. Learn how this simple technique turns dried paint into little decals that will cling to your ornament ball. Once you know how, you or your kids can easily turn an ordinary ornament ball into a beautiful work of art!

Supply List:

- Glossy ornament ball

- Glazed plate (from dollar store)

- Acrylic paint (in several colors)

- Paintbrush

- Mod Podge sealer (regular or glitter)

Important Note: You need to use a glossy ornament ball because a matte ball has no cling. Your “palette” (the plate) needs to have a glazed finish so your dried paint will have the proper cling. Check out your local dollar store for a cheap glazed plate. Also wax paper or a plastic surface does not give the paint enough cling.

Instructions:

1. Decide on the paint colors you want to use. Your finished ornament will be covered with individual circles of paint. So you should decide on a color scheme for your ornament before you begin. We recommend two colors in each circle and two or three different sets of these colors. An example would be red swirled with gold for one circle of paint and then green swirled with gold for another circle of paint.

2. On your plate, squirt out some paint (about the size of a large pea) for each color in your circle. Be sure to put the paint dabs for each circle very close to each other.

3. Swirl the dabs of paint together using the end (NOT the bristles) of your paintbrush. It takes very little mixing to get a beautiful swirl design. Too much blending and you just get a new color! Make each circle of paint about the size of a quarter. To cover a standard size ornament ball, make about 30 to 35 circles.

4. Once you have completed all of your circles of paint, let them dry for at least 12 hours. They need to be completely dry before you remove them from the plate.

5. Now carefully peel one dried paint circle off your plate. If you have any edges along your circles that you do not like, they can be cut off easily with scissors. Start by placing your circles around the neck of the ornament and work your way down from there. Press each one on so that it completely adheres to your ornament, and without any wrinkles. Continue to peel the circles off your plate one at a time. Be sure each circle is firmly pressed onto your ornament and that there are no cracks between circles. Just overlap each circle a little to avoid any cracks. Continue until your ornament is completely covered in circles.

6. Paint a coat of Mod Podge sealer over your entire ornament. Then hang it to dry for at least 24 hours.

You could be so creative with this technique. Maybe try stripes or a zig-zag pattern. Have some fun with this project and see what great looking designs you can come up with!

Tattoos. In days gone by only the rebels, the punks, rock stars and sailors would be brave enough to undergo the needle. Fast-forward to present day and a tattoo is as common as a soccer mom in a Chevrolet Suburban. (In fact, most soccer moms these days have at least one tattoo.) We all know the permanency of a tattoo, so doesn’t it make sense that when you’re ready to make a lifetime commitment of love, you’d tattoo your ring?

I think I hear a collective “Whoa, not so fast there, crazy lady. I love her/him, and plan to be with her/him forever. But isn’t a platinum or gold band enough?” Sure, the traditional band of precious metal is a perfect symbol to exchange at the moment you say I do. And you needn’t stick with just the tried-and-true metals, as you can select a band in cobalt, stainless steel, palladium, Tungsten or titanium, or of course platinum, white gold or yellow gold. And my guess is 98.5% of the female population wouldn’t give up the diamond engagement ring or a matching diamond eternity band. But what if couples who were determined to not fall into the 50%+ divorce statistic and really intended to stay married for a lifetime took the wedding ring a step further?

A tattooed wedding ring can be a beautiful design inspired by your culture, religion or a favorite piece of art. The tattoo could simply be your names tattooed on each others’ left fingers. It could be a meaningful verse from scripture (Song of Solomon from the Old Testament is filled with verses about love.) The tattoo could be I Love You in bold block letters that wrap around your finger. It could be a Celtic design or a band of your favorite colors, flowers or musical notes.

* Laying The Brick Patio Pattern. No matter whether you’ve selected bricks or an interlocking paving stone design, the next step is where the patio or drive “field” is actually set out … all the stones or bricks are laid down, true to your stone patio design. Dry sand is spread over the bricks or paver stones, followed by careful compacting which shakes and distributes sand into all the cracks. Result? Sand plus stones plus substrate “interlock” to form a solid, long wear surface.

Anyone who has seen Shaun White snowboarding knows that they are seeing pure skill and natural talent at its finest. He makes it look so easy and yet difficult at the same time. Although for Shaun White snowboarding may be what got him noticed in the extreme sports world initially, he actually is also a world class skateboarder as well. Although he is not even 21 yet, he also has managed to make a name for himself in the video game world, in movies and documentaries, and also developing a line of Shaun White snowboarding clothing with Burton called the “White Collection.”

What got Shaun White snowboarding? At the young age of six, White went with his family to a ski area and he wanted to take snowboarding lessons. He was told that he was too young, so his dad took lessons and then taught him. Shaun White snowboarding was so enthusiastic that his mom made him ride backwards to slow him down, which actually served to make him equally skilled in riding in both positions. When the Burton Company heard about Shaun White snowboarding, they began to use this young prodigy in their advertising.

But, for Shaun White snowboarding was not enough, soon after he took up the sport he also took up skateboarding. These sports are actually quite similar and he was able to utilize his natural ability to become skilled at both. The same year that he won his first gold medal in the X Games for snowboarding, he took up skateboarding as a professional sport and he now tours with Tony Hawk.

In 2006, the “Flying Tomato,” Shaun White won a gold medal in the half pipe event in the Winter Olympics in Torino and made himself even more of a household name in the United States. He has medaled 8 times in snowboarding in the X Games and 2 times in skateboarding. He has made a video called “The White Album,” is featured in a documentary called “First Descent” and will release an X Box game with his name and likeness in 2007. What will this young man do next? What won’t he do?
